About 'Pearl Knotters'

At Pearl Knotters we make attractive hand-knotted freshwater pearl necklaces and then sell them locally.

For fun please visit our online Museum of UK Vintage Pearl Necklaces. There you will find many examples of pearl necklaces sold in the UK and elsewhere from 1950s onwards including some modern brands.

Freshwater Pearl Necklaces

Baroque Freshwater Pearl Necklace
Although we could simply purchase freshwater pearls, we choose to mainly use recycled ones from broken necklaces as this seems environmentally better. We break these down for the pearls and then hand knot them, almost always with silk, and then add a safe attractive clasp. Freshwater pearls come in a range of interesting shapes and are often dyed to add a little colour. They make a lovely present.

Dyed Freshwater Pearl Necklace
China dominates global freshwater pearl production. Juvenile shellfish are mass‐produced in hatcheries and grown to seed size before grafting. The standard method uses small strips of tissue from donors that are inserted into the host. After insertion, the tissue forms a pearl sac and secretes nacre to make a pearl.
